Wimborne Choral Society celebrates its retiring Musical Director

Helen Woodall, member of Wimborne Choral Society, talks to us about the career of their Musical Director.

Christopher Dowie came to Dorset in 1977 as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Wimborne Minster; then, in 1978, he founded a no-audition choir, with the only requirement being a love of choral music and a desire to sing. Since then, Wimborne Choral Society has gone from strength to strength, singing most of the classic choral repertoire and works by modern composers, including by Chris himself.

Clive Downton, member of Ocean Harmony barbershop chorus, shares with us the group’s 20th anniversary celebration.

Ocean Harmony (the short name for the Southampton Barbershop Harmony Club) is a men's barbershop chorus, based near Southampton on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire. It has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in January, put together by volunteers throughout 2023.

Making Music's Co-Chief Executive, Barbara Eifler, reports on her recent experience at the mass Welsh male voice choirs' concert at the Royal Albert Hall. 

I'm not sure what I was expecting from such an event, but perhaps to come out being utterly charmed wasn't it. 

To some, male voice choirs might have a reputation for being old-fashioned, or just plain old, and their repertoire – and uniforms – maybe don't immediately speak to us not familiar with the genre, or to a younger generation, to suggest a must-see concert.

Congratulations to Derwent Brass for winning the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Inspiration Award, the first brass band to achieve this in the award's over 200-year history. We had the pleasure of interviewing Band Manager, Chris Leonard about the group’s historic win and what’s in store for the future.
