The Somerset Choral Society, an amateur SATB choir of approximately 40 singers, needs a new Musical Director from 1 February 2023. The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church Hall, Tweentown, Cheddar, North Somerset BS37 3HU, leading up to two concerts, performed currently in local churches.
We are a friendly choir and enjoy the experience of making music together both in rehearsals and during performances. Recent performances have included Rutter Requiem, Fauré Requiem, Stanford Songs of the Fleet, Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, Mozart Requiem, Haydn Paukenmesse, Rutter Magnificat and Sprig of Thyme, Mendelssohn Elijah, Chilcott On Christmas Night and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs.
The choir has been in existence for 35 years and has benefitted from the skills and leadership of five excellent Musical Directors.
We are now looking for an inspirational person to lead us forward.
The MD plans and conducts rehearsals from the keyboard, develops the choir’s choral skills, conducts our concerts, and plans the repertoire. Members of the choir are not auditioned but a good degree of musicality and some sight-reading skills are expected and necessary for the repertoire we undertake. The MD works in collaboration with the committee, attends the 2 or 3 committee meetings per year as an ex-officio member, and prepares a report for the AGM. The post is remunerated and is paid per session and per concert.
Further details about the choir are available on our website www.somersetchoralsociety.com Applications close on 1 February 2023.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview followed by an audition with the choir.
Prospective applicants, who will be expected to provide evidence of a sound musical background, experience, and skills, are welcome to contact our Chairman Ginny Waters: ginny.waters117@btinternet.com for further information.
The successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check. Please email your CV, a letter of application, and the names and contact details of two referees to Ginny.
