Somerset Choral Society

The Somerset Choral Society (previously called Somerset Singers)
is a choir of around 40 voices (SATB) and is the local Choral
Society in the area covering Cheddar, Axbridge, Wedmore,
Winscombe and other villages in the Cheddar Valley and North
Somerset. The Choir rehearses weekly from September to May in the
Cheddar RC Community Hall, Tweentown, Cheddar, BS27 3HU on
Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm, and provides two choral concerts
every year, at St John the Baptist Church, Axbridge in November,
and at St Cuthbert’s Church, Wells in May. We are always
pleased to welcome new members (there are no auditions) – just
email somersetchoralsociety@hotmail.com

The choir evolved from evening classes at the Kings of Wessex
School in Cheddar, and gave its first performance under the
direction of Peter Scott-Winfield in 1987. Since then it has
evolved over time, singing a wide repertoire of pieces and
consistently attracting large audiences.

During the pandemic lockdowns, the choir carried on rehearsing on
Zoom and following socially distanced protocols for communal
rehearsals both outdoor and indoor during 2020 and Spring 2021;
full rehearsals resumed in September 2021. The first post
pandemic concert Vivaldi Gloria and Pergolesi Magnificat was held
in November 2021 at St John the Baptist Church, Axbridge.
