Musical Director

The Hadley Court Singers of Haddington seek a Musical Director. Following the decision of its Musical Director to stand down after more than 6 years in post, the Hadley Court Singers are seeking to fill this vacancy in time for the start of its autumn season, commencing September 2025.

Formed in 1978, the Hadley Court Singers (HCS) is an amateur SATB chamber choir based in Haddington, East Lothian. HCS has been well supported over the years and enjoys great loyalty from its membership and audience. The choir aims to perform to a high standard while also creating enjoyment and friendship among its singers. 

HCS typically sings three concerts annually at various locations in East Lothian. These normally take place in December, March and May/June. The choir performs a wide repertoire of choral pieces from composers old and new with soloists and instrumentalists as required under the direction of our Musical Director.

We have an extensive library, with music from the 16th century to modern choral works. We are always keen to experience new music.

We are looking for a Musical Director with
•    excellent choir training and musical skills
•    a wide knowledge of choral repertoire
•    excellent interpersonal skills
•    a sense of humour, energy and enthusiasm
•    the ability to work with the choir’s committee to programme imaginative and attractive concerts
•    organisational and practical skills
•    ideally some demonstrable experience of procuring the services of soloists and orchestral players

The new Musical Director will have the full support of the Committee in developing an interesting and challenging programme and in furthering their own professional skills. Remuneration will be negotiable depending on experience and scope of work, and further details will be provided in an interview pack sent to short listed candidates.

The choir rehearses at the Holy Trinity Church in Haddington on a Wednesday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. This includes a short break for tea/coffee and a chance to catch up with fellow choir members. Rehearsals run in three terms of approximately 10 rehearsals leading up to a concert. There is normally one week’s break from rehearsals taken during the school half term holidays.

Short listed candidates will be invited for interview week commencing 26th May 2025.

The final selection will comprise a 30 minute rehearsal audition with the choir on Wednesday 4th June 2025.
