Musical Director

Application deadline:
Saturday, 31 May 2025
Description of vacancy:

A little about East Grinstead Concert Band:

We are a very friendly and welcoming group of individuals of a good musical standard, with excellent member attendance for both rehearsals and concerts.  The band require a minimum of grade 5 level or equivalent playing ability to join, with a good number of its playing members of grade 8 level across several of the instrument sections who are more than capable of playing solo pieces.

We perform at local engagements regularly throughout the year, mainly on weekends over the summer months through to Christmas – including bandstands, our own formal concerts and charity fundraising concerts, East Grinstead town events including the Remembrance Sunday Parade, The Bluebell Railway (a steam heritage line), the popular Edenbridge & Oxted Agricultural Show, fetes and private bookings.

We have organised several concert tours over the years, namely Belgium (2014), Germany (2017), Bath and Somerset (2019), The Netherlands (2022), and Belgium (2024).  The band really enjoy these tours coupling music making with socialising, something that is very much behind the band’s ethos.

We rehearse every Wednesday between 8.00-10.00pm at the British Legion Headquarters, Station Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1DJ.

In 2024 the band celebrated their 50th anniversary since forming and look forward to many more years of music making.

What we are looking for as our new Musical Director:

The band are looking to appoint an individual who is able to maintain and improve the already high standard of musicality within the band, to help attract new players and to assist the band’s committee with expanding the band’s profile within the local area.

The candidate should have conducting experience, preferably with Wind Bands, and able to demonstrate their excellent musical knowledge by giving clear and friendly guidance throughout each rehearsal and concert.

You should be able to assemble a suitable music programme from the current music pad for each concert to entertain our varying audiences, giving band members notice of these programmes in advance for home practice.

Knowledge on wind band music is useful but not essential as the band’s committee would be able to assist with this.

You should have excellent communication skills both with the band and our audiences.

The position is paid, covering expenses and travel (a driving licence is essential).

Please send any applications to our Chairman, Chris Davis, by email to egcb.enquiries@gmail.com, including a covering letter and musical CV noting your conducting experience.  The deadline for applications is Saturday 31st May, with auditions to be held over June and July.
