Founded in 1856 and reformed in 1967, Godalming Choral Society is a SATB choir of around 70 members, currently non-auditioned. We are friendly, dynamic and forward-looking – we are now developing our Children’s Choir for those aged 7-11, which has its own Musical Director. We sing a range of music, from the choral classics (including lesser-known works) to modern pieces: for our 50th (reformation) anniversary we gave the world première of a work we commissioned from opera composer Noah Mosley. An early highlight of this year was our performance in September 2023 of Verdi’s Requiem with an audience of over 600: this took place in the Theatre in the Woods, the home of Grange Park Opera, under our own Musical Director and with support from other local choirs.
We rehearse on Tuesday evenings with a professional accompanist, over three terms in approximate alignment with school term times. We usually give three concerts each year, on a Saturday evening following a final afternoon rehearsal.
The ideal candidate will be ambitious, energetic and enthusiastic, with a good sense of humour and a positive and motivational approach to rehearsals. They will have the skills to work comfortably with an amateur choir of varying ability whilst maximising the singing qualities of all, and will have both proven experience of choral and orchestral direction and a wide knowledge of traditional and modern repertoire.
