As (probably) the largest regularly performing Big Band in the UK, this is an exciting chance to lead a group of dedicated and enthusiastic players in a new phase for the ensemble. We have over 100 members, and regularly have rehearsals and gigs with 40 or more players. We rehearse weekly throughout the year and play 25 to 30 gigs a year, including out of London.
The Conductor will lead rehearsals and gigs. They will curate the development of our repertoire and guide the musical philosophy of the band. They will be involved in the sourcing and acceptance of gigs and contribute to and lead extra musical initiatives run by the band such as improvisation courses.
SLJO is a spirited group of dedicated amateur musicians from a variety of backgrounds, whose aim is to promote and perform Big Band jazz in the community, to improve the musicianship of members, and to have as much fun as possible while doing so.
The Conductor will be committed to SLJO’s community ethos and place it at the heart of their musical leadership of the band. They will also continue the development of the band, its repertoire and of individual members’ playing, which we have been enjoying under James Keirle.
The band is non-auditioned. A minimum of Grade 5 is recommended, with a range of abilities up to semi-pro level. SLJO is formed of a standard Big Band line up (including clarinets and flutes) including vocalists. Whilst a good percentage of the music played by the band focuses on classic Big Band Swing, the band also enjoys playing blues, latin and funk tunes and some more modern numbers.
Application is via CV and covering letter sent to SLJO.Recruitment@gmail.com by 5pm on Friday 15 September 2023
