Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society is one of the oldest choirs in Wales and celebrates its 85th anniversary this year. It is a mixed voice auditioned choir that currently comprises about 85 members from all walks of life. The choir prides itself on a warm and welcoming ethos and believes strongly in inclusiveness and diversity. Following a successful 5-year tenure, Alex Thacker is stepping down as Director of Music in March for family reasons, and the society is now seeking to appoint a new, inspiring Director of Music to continue to develop the choir, its singing skills and repertoire.
The choir performs three major concerts a year at Llandaff Cathedral, with soloists and professional orchestra or piano /organ accompaniment, and a Christmas Carol Service. Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society is seeking a Director of Music with suitable choral experience who can motivate members to achieve the high standards of performance expected by its audiences, in an engaging and enthusiastic manner. The new Director will need to be able to rehearse the choir at St Marks Church, Gabalfa, Cardiff on Monday evenings, between 7.30pm - 9.30pm during the academic year. He or she will also be required for an additional evening rehearsal in the week prior to our concerts, which are performed on Saturdays.
We are seeking someone who:
- has experience of choral training and performance
- is a natural communicator
- has experience of working with professional orchestras and soloists
- will challenge and further develop the choir and its repertoire
If you believe you have the vision and ability to lead this flourishing choir, please submit your application by email to the Secretary at secretary.llandaffccs@gmail.com
Applications must include a CV and a covering letter detailing your suitability for the post and outlining what you believe you can bring to the choir. In addition, you should submit a suggested costed programme for 2 years (6 concerts), with a minimum of one orchestral concert per year. This 2 year programme should come within an approximate total budget for soloists and musicians of £26,000.
The successful candidate would be self-employed with a Contract for Services. Fees would be agreed by negotiation. Please indicate in your application the level of fees you would expect.
Closing date 28 February 2023. Longlisted candidates will be interviewed online in the week starting 27th March 2023 and shortlisted candidates will be asked to undertake half of an evening choir rehearsal on either Monday 3rd July or Monday 10th July 2023. Rehearsals are 7.30pm to 9.30pm with a short mid-rehearsal break.
