Director of Music

The Bury St Edmunds Concert Band is looking to appoint a Director of Music from January 2023.  The vacancy has arisen following the retirement of Rob Head, the Band’s Director of Music since 2013.  During the last 10 years, the Band has gone from strength to strength, and we want to continue to develop both as a Band and as individual musicians. 

Our next Director of Music is key to making this happen.  Are you the person we are looking for?

Established in 1991, we are a talented community band of approximately 55 musicians (brass, woodwind and percussion).  We do not audition prospective members but expect them to have a playing ability of at least grade 5 standard. We rehearse every Monday evening in Bury St Edmunds and are a friendly, non-competitive group of people who enjoy playing together and creating an amazing sound!

Application, Audition and Appointment process

Please email the Chair of the Band sarah.dunsdon@btinternet.com outlining your interest in this role, your experience and what you would bring to the Bury St Edmunds Concert Band.

Applicants will be invited to watch us at a rehearsal, to get a feel for us.  This will be followed by an invitation to an audition, where we will ask applicants to rehearse an agreed piece of music with the Band.  This will be followed by a Q&A session with the Band (lasting no longer than 20 minutes) and the opportunity to talk to the Committee.

All candidates will be contacted by the Chair within 14 days of the audition.
