The high court has quashed regulations, introduced by the government last year, that made it legal for individuals to copy CDs bought for their own private use, including 'ripping' these onto personal music libraries like iTunes.

There has been legislation in place since the 1930s to ensure that children in the performing arts are not exploited and that they are properly protected from harm. Until recently, most local authorities have not thought amateur music groups subject to this legislation. In the last year or so, though, an increasing number of members have raised the issue with Making Music that their local authorities have asked them to apply for licenses for each child for each performance, as well as provide trained and licensed chaperones.

BBC Music Day aims to connect communities and generations through a UK-wide celebration of music on TV, Radio, online and at live events.
In June this year, the very first BBC Music Day featured over 20 live music events, including a 73-mile musical relay from dawn to dusk along Hadrian’s Wall, a special educational needs and disability youth concert with The British Paraorchestra in Bristol, and a record-breaking musical event in Cardiff.

So you and your choir fancy a challenge? They don't come greater than the World Choir Games which in July 2016 will take place in Sochi, Russia. Every two years this massive competition comes to a different continent and the last ones were in Riga, in Latvia.

It’s easy for conductors starting their careers to regard amateur orchestras as a step en route to the inevitable glory of the Berlin Philharmonic. Some people probably don’t even consider conducting amateurs a possibility. But I cut my teeth with this early on and I started to realise that I enjoyed it more than conducting professionals.

I’m really looking forward to working on this project. Last weekend, I was able to meet the Jan Modelski Community Orchestra, who I’m working with, and get to know them – I think I chatted to about half the members of the orchestra, and they’re all really interested and keen to get to work.
Today was just about getting ideas – up until now I’ve deliberately left my mind as a blank canvas where writing for JMCO is concerned, as I wanted to wait until I’d heard them play.
