Westbury Park Orchestra is based in North Bristol and rehearses on Monday evenings at Red Maids Junior School.
Before lockdown we were a thriving Community Orchestra led by Ben England with 50 people regularly attending rehearsals. The orchestra comprises a good representation across all instruments - violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, oboes, flutes, bassoons, timpani and even an ecletic brass section of trumpets, trombones, saxes, French horn and tuba.
There is no audition and our average standard is probably about grade 5-6. We have performed mostly for charity purposes, including at local care homes, churches and at Southmead hospital for their regular 'buskathons'. Our emphasis is on community and enjoyment.
Our repertoire is mostly five-part open-score arrangements but we also have some specially arranged pieces – as Ben, our previous conductor said, Haydn didn't write much for the saxophone.....
