Musical Director

Job description

The main duties of the musical director are to:

• Lead the future artistic development of Uckfield Concert Brass
• Prepare for and conduct at rehearsals to ensure that all music is successfully delivered to meet concert schedules
• Conduct and compere all performances by the band
• Create well-balanced concert programmes to meet the requirements of the event
• Where appropriate, liaise with event organisers
• Attend and report to the band’s monthly committee meetings and the annual general meeting
• Attend other meetings, including the Proms on the Pitch sub-committee
• Take responsibility for booking acts for Proms on the Pitch and other events and shape their musical contents
• Liaise on a day-day basis with the band chair, secretary and librarian
• Work with the committee to maintain enthusiasm, discipline and attendance at rehearsals and performances

Person specification

Suitable applicants should have the following:

• Broad musical background and education
• Comprehensive experience of working as a conductor and musical director with amateur music groups
• Good knowledge of traditional brass band instrumentation, although not necessarily as a brass player/conductor
• Energy, precision and a composed, affable attitude
• Ability to build a rapport with individuals of all ages and musical abilities, fostering an environment where players feel engaged and motivated
• Open approach to investigate and implement new music-making opportunities
• Strong leadership skills, particularly in organisation, motivation and creativity
• Ability to identify and rehearse a wide variety of music that both stimulates the interest of players and is enjoyed by audiences
• Ability to arrange and re-score new music where necessary to suit players abilities and instrumentation
• Ability to afford brass players the opportunity of playing together, and to further their musical education and technique in the performance and interpretation of music
• Excellent communications skills with external stakeholders, performers and audiences
• Ability to support and work closely with the leader of our junior band Brass Rascals, to ensure progression of youngsters into Uckfield Concert Brass when ready to do so
