Musical Director/Conductor

The Musical Director will have the following responsibilities:

a) Performance

• To conduct all public concerts

b) Rehearsals

• The orchestra meets weekly on Saturdays 10:00–12:30 and rehearsals following the pattern of school terms.  Rehearsals are held in Sheffield City Centre. The Musical Director should take responsibility for planning and taking all rehearsals.  The Musical Director is responsible for organising suitable cover should they not be available to conduct a rehearsal. 

c) Repertoire

• The repertoire is selected by the Musical Director, working with the leader and taking into account the views of the membership of the orchestra.

• The current repertoire is varied, from symphonic to film music.  SYO has recently commissioned alumni to compose new music for the orchestra.  The Council is  particularly keen to continue to diversify the music the orchestra performs, particularly repertoire by composers from backgrounds currently underrepresented on the concert platform.

d) Management• The Musical Director is expected to attend Council meetings 3 or 4 a year, and the Annual General Meeting.

• Formal links with the orchestra via the Chair and the Council.
