Serenata Women's Choir was set up in 2016 and sings mainly in three parts – first soprano, second soprano and alto, both accompanied and unaccompanied and now has 24 members. Not all members read music, but members are auditioned to ensure that they can hold their line and blend with other voices.
Our repertoire is chosen from a range of musical genres and includes music from the classical choral tradition, spirituals, arrangements of folk songs and popular favourites. We feature the work of women composers and invite local musicians and performers to join us for some performances.
The choir rehearses from September to May and works towards two main performances at Christmas and in the Spring and takes part in other musical opportunities throughout the year.
Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings (7.30 – 9.30pm) in Loanhead Parish Church, 118 The Loan, Loanhead in the autumn term and in St John’s and King’s Park Church, 31 Eskbank Road, Dalkeith in the spring term.
Throughout the lockdown periods, the choir continued to meet and rehearse via Zoom – this was a huge learning curve for the choir, but members rose to the challenge and embraced the new technology.
Our virtual Spring Concert in May 2021 was called “Awakening” and featured photography by choir members as well as our voices. Here’s the link to that concert:
