Musical Director

We are a community organisation, open to all ages and abilities without audition, with a main Concert Band, and a Training Band with its own Conductor.

The main Concert Band is comprised of enthusiastic amateur musicians, of at least Grade 5 standard, as well as some music teachers and former professionals.  While we are a friendly and relaxed group, we’re motivated by our passion for music and enjoyment of playing, and therefore strive towards high standards, with a reputation for punching above our weight in terms of the quality of our performances.

We enjoy performing a diverse repertoire, including wind compositions, marches, and transcriptions of classical, popular and film music.  Central to our ethos is maintaining a balance between accessible and more challenging pieces, for the benefit of both our players and audience.

The Concert Band performs 3-5 concerts each year, usually including one bandstand, and from time to time we organise small ensembles for charitable or other events.

As Musical Director you will:

• Conduct our weekly rehearsals on Tuesdays 7:15-9:15pm (40 weeks a year) at The Guildhall, Cattle Market, Sandwich CT13 9AH, encouraging, inspiring, and supportively challenging the ensemble, with good humour.
• Develop the band’s direction and agree repertoire with the Committee.
• Conduct and present concerts, and agree in advance the concert programme with the Committee and Training Band Conductor.
• If available, deputise for the Training Band Conductor occasionally (Tuesdays 6:00-7:00pm).

Additionally, if you are interested in greater involvement with the leadership of the band, you would be very welcome to attend Committee Meetings and contribute to Committee strategies, such as recruiting new players and broadening our audience.

The position of Musical Director is available from January 2023, but we are prepared to be flexible for the right candidate.
