Musical Director

Salisbury Community Choir (SCC) is a non-auditioned, friendly choir of around 120 members. Jeremy Backhouse, our Musical Director for the last 10 years, is retiring in July and we need a replacement. We sing in four parts (SATB) with a wide range of music from choral classics to classic pop and newly commissioned work. Although non-auditioned, most of our members can follow music and many can read it.

Rehearsal: Thursday 7.15pm - 9.15pm in Salisbury
Terms: self-employed, fee per rehearsal to be agreed

Key responsibilities

- To plan, prepare and take weekly rehearsals, around 40-42 a year.
- In consultation with  choir trustees, choose music and work with them to plan concerts, normally a minimum of 3 a year.
- To improve and develop the musical training of the choir.
 
Essential skills/experience

- To be an inspirational teacher, able to lead a large group of men and women keeping the whole group engaged, despite their mixed experience and skill.
- To have a positive and enthusiastic approach to a wide range of music, building the confidence and skills of our singers.
- To have both patience and persistence in the pursuit of a good standard of performance.
- Be a proficient musician, with experience of directing a choir.

Remuneration

- An agreed fee per rehearsal will be paid, based on 40-42 rehearsals.
- An agreed concert fee will be paid.
- A fee will be agreed separately for services provided on SCC tours outside of the UK.

Interviews will be held in June 2022. Auditions for chosen candidates will be during choir rehearsals in July. The Musical Director will be expected to start work in September.
