Music Director

Harrow Choral Society is an auditioned SATB choir of 80 to 90 members based in Harrow, Middlesex. Our current Music Director is leaving in July of this year after 30 years of service and we are seeking a new MD to start in September 2022.

HCS performs four concerts each season in and around Harrow, and we undertake regular tours in the UK and abroad.  Our repertoire of classical music includes major works, newly commissioned music and lighter music which typically features in our summer concerts.  

We aim to reach the highest possible standard, taking great pleasure in the joy of singing together and in the opportunity to perform concerts with professional soloists and orchestras. We offer all members the opportunity to develop their singing and musical skills through vocal coaching, sectional rehearsals and workshops. On resuming in-person rehearsals in September 2021 after 18 months rehearsing via Zoom we recruited a good number of new members and the choir is currently buoyant and singing well.

We are seeking a Music Director to work at a professional level and provide leadership to continue the development of the choir.   Essential requirements of the role include:

•    Experience of conducting amateur choirs for a number of years
•    Experience of conducting varied choral repertoire, including major works with orchestra and soloists
•    Excellent knowledge of singing
•    An appreciation of amateur music making and an understanding of how to enable HCS to perform at its best
•    The ability to set and achieve high standards of singing through encouragement and a positive approach
• The ability to plan varied and interesting concert programmes

We rehearse with a professional accompanist on Monday evenings from 7.45 to 9.45 at St Albans Church, North Harrow, HA2 7PF. Additional pre-concert rehearsals and workshops are also scheduled.
