Fulham Camerata seeks Musical Director for September 2024

Application deadline:
Friday, 26 January 2024
Description of vacancy:

Fulham Camerata (London SW6) is seeking a new Musical Director from September 2024.  Fulham Camerata is a distinctive, well-respected and financially viable amateur chamber choir which sings to a high standard.  Fulham Camerata works with professional singers, soloists and orchestras, typically in the early stages of their careers, and currently employs 3 choral scholars and an accompanist. Ralph Allwood is our patron and our current Composer in Residence is Alexander Hopkins.

The choir, with 30-40 singers, has grown and developed under the inspired leadership of Directors James Day (2015 – 2018) and Harry Castle (2018 – 2024). We explore varied repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st Century, the obscure alongside the well-known. We typically perform one concert per term with an additional Christmas charity concert. We have also sung in music festivals including the Brandenburg and Barnes festivals.  We became a registered charity in November 2022.

We are now recruiting a Musical Director for September 2024. The candidate must be enthusiastic about working with and encouraging keen amateurs, to help them develop their singing skills and musicianship with confidence.  You should be able to inspire the choir, be approachable, have a sense of joy and fun but also have clarity and authority. You should also have the patience and skills required to deal with mixed abilities, helping develop the less experienced while maintaining the interest of the more accomplished.

You must have experience in training choirs and working with soloists, and have a good knowledge of classical choral repertoire. You should be reliable and organized, willing to work closely with the committee, be able to plan suitable programmes (planning 3 concerts in advance), select soloists and professional instrumentalists, contribute programme notes, and have a wish to work with the choir for several years. You should be committed to making rehearsals enjoyable whilst inspiring members to achieve the highest standards and performance.

We run three typically ten-week terms Autumn, Spring and Summer, plus a 3 week Christmas term, each culminating in a concert. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 - 9.30pm at Holy Cross Church, Fulham SW6.  A fee of £95 per rehearsal will be paid, with additional concert fees which vary according to repertoire and orchestral involvement  .We are looking to recruit someone based in the greater London area, ideally within an hour's travel time from Fulham.  For more information, download an application document from our website https://fulhamcamerata.com
