Devon Philharmonic Orchestra is seeking to appoint a talented, knowledgeable and highly skilled Music Director to provide artistic direction and leadership, and to further the development of the orchestra.
Founded in 1967 as Exeter Music Group and based in Exeter, Devon Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the region’s largest and finest ensembles, with a reputation built on showcasing local talent and inspiring audiences with its exhilarating sound and ambitious repertoire. Drawing on its large membership, the orchestra provides a varied and adventurous programme and regularly attracts capacity audiences, performing in Exeter Cathedral, with three major concerts as well as smaller-scale chamber events.
The orchestra is a non-profit making organisation with charitable status. In May 2019, under its previous name, EMG was awarded the Lord Mayor of Exeter's Commendation for services to charity and the wider community over many years.
Recent concert highlights have included Planets, Carmina Burana, Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, an Arts Council funded project in collaboration with Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum, and many major symphonic works.
We are looking for someone who can build on the achievements of the orchestra and has a vision for its future. Applicants should have a background that includes studies in orchestral conducting, as well as experience in concert programming, and working with choirs and professional soloists. The successful candidate will have excellent skills in leading, encouraging and motivating players.
Applicants need to be available to rehearse in Exeter every Thursday during term time and for the three concerts which take place on Saturdays.
This is a self-employed position with a fee in line with MU rates. Other activities and reasonable travel expenses will be remunerated at an agreed rate with the Committee.
The deadline for applications is 25th November. A shortlist of applicants will be invited for interview in late January 2023, and auditions held on Thursday 23rd February, with a view to taking up the post in May or September 2023.
