Congresbury Singers is a well-established, non-auditioning SATB choir which has been performing for the local community for over 40 years. We normally host 4/5 concerts a year, usually in November, December, Spring/Easter and Summer, plus supporting events such as Christmas carol singing & winter Wassailing in the village.
The choir currently has approx. 25 members post covid, of all ages, who meet in Congresbury War Memorial Hall and Social Club on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm during term time. We aim to sing a wide-ranging repertoire to appeal, not only to our loyal long-standing members but also to our newer, younger members. Our motto is “as long as we have music” and you will find us a friendly, social bunch, who enjoy making music and sharing it with our friends and community.
The choir is looking for an experienced, energetic and enthusiastic Musical Director, who can lead the choir as it seeks to expand the development of its musical repertoire and the quality of its performance. Our new MD should have a warm and friendly personality. He/she will help us attract new members, as we work to rebuild choir numbers and the balance of voices back to pre-covid levels.
The MD will report to the choir chair and work closely with the committee but will have overall responsibility for the selection, rehearsal and performance of the choir’s concerts.
Specifically, the role requirements are:
- To help the choir enjoy our singing, sing to a good standard and enjoy a variety of musical styles.
- To explore both secular and sacred music which suits our skills and stretches our ability, with increased emphasis on more modern genres, which appeal to both to the choir and our concert audiences.
- In consultation with the committee, to develop an annual programme of concerts, supported by effective and enjoyable weekly rehearsals, to ensure that the choir is ready for each concert.
- To work collaboratively with the accompanist, librarian and committee to ensure that rehearsals and concerts run effectively.
- To achieve the highest possible musical standards in our concerts within agreed budgets.
- To be primarily responsible for engaging soloists and provide advice as necessary.
- Where practical, to develop soloists from within the choir.
- To attend committee meetings and provide advice as necessary.
The remuneration for rehearsals and concerts will be based on Making Music scale of fees and is negotiable for the right candidate.
Applicants should submit a CV and covering letter, with the names and contact details of two referees to the chair, Angela Hanson by email to:
