CHADDESLEY VOICES, Worcestershire – JOB DESCRIPTION FOR MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Chaddesley Voices is an unauditioned community choir founded in 2009 and based in Chaddesley Corbett near Kidderminster. There are approximately 45 enthusiastic members singing in four parts – sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, although the latter two often combine on a baritone part. The accompanist has been with the choir since its inception.

We are looking for an inspirational Musical Director who has a clear understanding of vocal technique and a good sense of humour who can work effectively with amateur singers of varying abilities and differing levels of musical experience, to bring the best out of this choir and further develop its skills.

We are seeking someone with an energetic leadership style as we strive to attain a high standard of music making, to develop our wide repertoire ranging from light classical to popular music and to broaden the appeal for both the choir and its audience.

The ideal candidate will have some experience of choral direction with adult choirs and a wide knowledge of different types of choral repertoire. The candidate should be aware of the need to support the vocal health of the singers and demonstrate inclusive teaching and communication practices.

The MD will be responsible for planning and leading rehearsals, teaching new music and reviving past repertoire, conducting the choir and accompanist at concerts, and, in conjunction with the committee, engaging professional soloists and musicians when required. They will also work in a collaborative way with the committee on the selection of music for concerts and other events.

We rehearse on the second, fourth and fifth Tuesdays of the month during the three choir terms - from 19.30 until 21.30 at St. Cassians Church Chaddesley Corbett & the Village Hall. The annual season runs from September to early July. The MD would be expected to arrange a deputising conductor in the event of absence.

The Musical Director will be appointed on a self-employed basis, with a remuneration subject to negotiation, and having regard to the candidates’ skills and previous experience. The level of remuneration will be reviewed annually.

The selection process will include an interview (which may be virtual) and then a rehearsal audition in early February 2025. The successful candidate will be asked to take up the post in February. The contract will be subject to an agreed probationary period.
