Mass of the Children

For our summer concert, Chandos Chamber Choir is delighted to collaborate with Boutcher Primary School Choir to perform a programme of modern choral works by contemporary composers including John Rutter.

Rutter, one of the most loved contemporary composers, not least due to his extensive arrangements and compositions of Christmas carols, was born in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge where he subsequently became Director of Music.  His Mass of the Children, which will be performed by both choirs, was premiered in February 2003.  A ‘missa brevis’ (literally ‘short mass’ – in this case as the setting omits the Credo movement), the lyrics also include extracts from poems such as William Blake’s The Lamb which is interwoven with the text of the Agnus Dei.

As well as this and other works by Rutter, we are also looking forward to sharing two pieces by Will Todd (born 1970): Blessed are the Peacemakers and Fire of Love, as well as music by Bob Chilcott and Tamela Mann.  Join us on Thursday 27 June for a delightful programme of summer music.
