Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Masterworks Concert

SCO Masterworks Concert March 2025

Four masterpieces feature in tonight’s concert and we are delighted to welcome back Tim Horton as our fabulous soloist.
This concert is not to be missed!

We begin with Mozart’s overture to his opera “Cosi fan tutte”. Full of Mozart’s usual brio, brimming with energy as well as being fun, fast, lively, and with plenty of gorgeous syncopated contrasts, his tunes make full use of the treble end of our orchestra.

Next we have Delius’ tone poem “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring”  Sir Thomas Beecham said that this work “touched perfection.”

Tim Horton is our fabulous soloist tonight. Tim is one of the UK’s leading pianists https://timhortonpianist.co.uk/
We’re playing Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto. This is a beautiful romantic piece that gives room to the orchestra, without diminishing the role of the piano.

Finally we are playing Beethoven’s Symphony No 2 in D. Beethoven finished composing his second symphony when he was starting to go beyond the established classical music conventions of his time and composing with a bolder more individual voice. From this point on his works increasingly grapple with human themes such as struggle, assertion, or celebration. Listen out for the rich melodic themes in the slow second movement and  the energetic dancing scherzo.
