About the event:

To fully include everyone in our music activities, we need to understand the barriers that stop people from attending, taking part or progressing. In the Conversation about inclusion series of events, hear about the issues from the perspective of those who directly experience barriers and discuss what we can do to change things from within our own music groups.

For this conversation, we are joined by Jeremy Haneman to talk about repertoire – the pieces of music our groups choose to play or sing. How can the choices we make help – or hinder – the creation of an inclusive and diverse group, and to connect with a more diverse audience? We’ll be considering how to select repertoire that is respectful to all cultures and communities, and how to review core repertoire to spot messages that can exclude. We’ll also talk about how to diversify repertoire to include work from under-represented communities – What are the challenges to finding and tackling these often hidden pieces, and what benefits can it bring for our musicians and our audiences?

British Australian conductor Jeremy Haneman leads multiple choirs in London, and he is the Co-Director of Together Productions, a not-for-profit organisation that produces ground-breaking work using music and the arts to inspire social change. Together Productions’ programmes work with hundreds of singers from marginalised backgrounds including refugees, torture survivors, asylum seekers as well as people with mental health challenges. Jeremy Haneman was the Community Chorus Director for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden 2011-2020, and he is the Artistic Director of Thames Opera Company and a Practitioner Council member of the Association of British Choral Directors. He did post graduate training in conducting at the University of Cambridge.
