About the event:

Making Music has been approached to host a meeting for instrumental ensemble conductors, to facilitate a discussion on development, training and mentoring needs and opportunities.

There are training organisations and networks for vocal group leaders, but none for conductors of leisure-time instrumental groups (except brass band conductors).

Making Music were therefore approached to see if we would host and facilitate a meeting for instrumental group conductors to talk to each other, discuss Continuous Professional Development, mentoring, peer support, training and other dvelopmenr opportunities, and any other relevant matters.

Would you like to have a regular or occasional Zoom network? Are you interested in setting up a peer support scheme to offer or receive helpful pointers from colleagues? What other ideas are there that you would like to explore?

Making Music will also share our resource on Recruiting an MD which has already had contributions from conductors, but comments are always welcome and/or additions. We would also be interested to know how useful you are finding our Musical Vacancies page.

The discussion will be facilitated by Helen Harrison Music Director and Conductor of Making Music member groups Blackpool Symphony Orchestra and Preston Opera and Making Music CEO Barbara Eifler.

We will hear from the Association of Brinitsh Choral Directors, to understand what these networks provide in terms of support for their members.

Other speakers to be confirmed.

We'll talk about:

  • Available network models, e.g. BBCA, abcd
  • Development needs and opportunities for conductors of leisure-time instrumental groups
  • Network(ing) and peer support needs or wishes
  • Making Music and other resources

Who this event is for:

Anyone is welcome to attend this event, but it will be particularly relevant for conductors of leisure-time instrumental groups - orchestras, bands, small or large ensembles of all kinds.

Cost: FREE for members and non-members

We will be using Zoom to host the meeting, and will send the joining link by email, one hour before the event is due to start.
