Magnificat and More

A concert featuring two works by Taylor Scott Davis, an up and coming American composer. In How can I keep from Singing he frames a tune by Robert Lowry and moulds into a dialogue between the voice parts and the accompaniment. His Magnificat was premiered by VOCES8 and is a beautiful setting of the story of Mary from youth to being God’s chosen one.

Between these are two contrasting versions of Panis Angelicus, one well known by Cesar Franck and the other becoming so, by Rebecca Dale. The final work in the concert is Requiem by Matthew Coleridge which is becoming one one of the UK’s most popular new choral works, and was one of the highest new entries in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2023.  Described by the late Sir Neville Marriner as “a valuable addition to 21st century choral repertoire”, this deeply moving work and its beautiful, flowing melodies have made it a firm favourite with singers and audiences alike.

Harrogate Choral Society will once again be joined by the National Festival Orchestra and will be conducted by David Lawrence, with soprano soloist Eleonore Cockerham
