Vaughan Williams – Wasps Overture
Ravel – Piano Concerto in G Major
Sibelius – Symphony No. 3
Conductor: Phil Ellis
Piano soloist: Antoine Préat
Surrey Mozart Players begin their 2024-25 season with three distinctive and characterful works. The concert opens with the Wasps overture offering a bustling succession of tunes in the best traditional Vaughan Williams style. Gifted young pianist, Antoine Préat is the soloist for Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major. Expect flamboyant music with a lightness of touch to delight the mind and senses but with depths of feeling beneath its glittering surfaces. Finnish folk influences are to the fore in the 3rd Symphony by Sibelius – good-natured, triumphant and deceptively simple sounding, this is a delight. The concert marks the beginning of the second full season for the SMP under the baton of Music Director, Philip Ellis and is a wonderful opportunity to hear some thrilling music live in the heart of Guildford in the historic surroundings and wonderful acoustic of Holy Trinity Church.
This Guildford-based chamber orchestra has earned a well-deserved reputation for imaginative, exciting and entertaining programmes featuring repertoire from Baroque and Classical, to modern masterpieces including performances of newly commissioned works. The orchestra performs 5 concerts each season at the Electric Theatre, Holy Trinity Church, the Menuhin Hall and other venues.
