A New Accompanist/Assistant Musical Director for Cantar Community Choir, York
Cantar is a non-profit making choir that performs for enjoyment and aims to provide pleasure to audiences in the York area. Profits from events are shared between two charities nominated each year. Rehearsals are held every Monday evening in The Priory Street Centre, York from 7.30 until 9.30 pm. We rehearse throughout the year except during August and with breaks for Easter and Christmas. Performances are given both in and out of doors, and we perform both accompanied and acapella works.
We are looking for a committed, friendly and talented person with excellent piano skills who is enthusiastic and keen to join and support our Music Team. The successful candidate will accompany the choir each week at our rehearsals, perform with us at concerts, assist in running sectionals and cover for our MD, Eimear Hurley, in her absence. Eimear joined us in November 2021 and is enthusiastically bringing the choir back together again after the challenges of Covid.
Each year, Cantar performs 2 or 3 indoor concerts, including a Christmas concert and one outdoor concert. We also support our charities and other charities singing short sets in York City Centre, particularly at Christmas. We have a Christmas afternoon concert planned for 17th December at St Michael le Belfrey.
Membership has remained strong over the past 2 years during the pandemic and new applicants are coming forward to join the choir. We retain the ambition to improve our performance skills and broaden our repertoire and so enhance our reputation but some rebuilding of confidence will be needed after the restrictions of the Covid lockdown.
Interview and Audition:
Our Committee will invite applicants to meet with two choir members and Eimear for an interview. The successful candidates will then be invited to attend a rehearsal at which the candidate will accompany the choir and conduct the choir for a short piece.
Our new Accompanist/Assistant Musical Director will be chosen by a majority vote of the whole choir.
This post becomes available after interviews/auditions to be held at the beginning of September 2022.
