Musical Director sought for Brighton Consort
Brighton Consort is looking to recruit an inspiring and friendly Musical Director to share our passion for early music. Our current Director, James Dixon, will be leaving in summer 2020 following a tenure of 4 highly successful years. Brighton Consort is a group of 25-30 singers who have a reputation for ambitious exploration of the rich repertoire of renaissance and early baroque music from Europe and the New World, whilst also including works by 20th Century composers.
The position will commence in September 2020 and will be of interest to any director who is passionate about early music and imaginative programming. The choir has a comprehensive library of music to draw from, but can also buy in or hire music for each concert. The singers are all reasonably good at sight reading and are also expected to work on the music at home. Many of our members are very knowledgeable about the early music repertoire, and we have good links to other local groups and musicians. Several of our members are closely involved with the Brighton Early Music Festival.
Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 8.00 – 10.00 pm in St George’s Church, Kemptown, Brighton – usually from mid-September until late June. At present Brighton Consort prepares three programmes of music each year, with either one or two performances of each programme in November/December, March and June/July. Much of our music consists of a capella works but from time to time we perform with professional or skilled amateur instrumentalists and soloists. Other concert formats or timings may also be considered.
Applications should be sent by email to the choir Chairman, Mike Clemens (M.Clemens0@gmail.com), with a CV and supporting statement saying why you are interested in this post. It would be helpful if you could give an indication of the fee you would expect for a two hour rehearsal and for a concert (including a rehearsal on the day). The closing date for applications is 31st March 2020. Selected applicants will be interviewed by a small panel and also auditioned by the choir on a Wednesday in April or May.
