Joe Galuszka, Music Director of Winterbourne Wind Band, tells us about his group's recent milestone.
Earlier this year in August, Winterbourne Wind Band (WWB) proudly marked its tenth anniversary, celebrating a decade of music, camaraderie, and growth. Founded in 2014, as part of the Avon Wind Band Association in Bristol (a family of four bands!), the group has evolved from humble beginnings into a thriving ensemble, now with over 40 musicians spanning various ages and skill levels, bringing wind music to the Bristol and South Gloucestershire communities and beyond.
The milestone was celebrated with a special anniversary concert at 'Resound', a relatively new concert venue in Mangotsfield, where the band performed an exciting repertoire that showcased the breadth of their musical journey. From classic wind band pieces to modern showstoppers, the concert was a testament to the band’s dedication and versatility. The celebration continued with a relaxed gathering at Kingsgate Park, where band members and their families enjoyed a sunny afternoon of food, drinks, and memories shared (with a cake to go with it too!). The day was filled with laughter, and it reflected the strong sense of community that has always been at the heart of the band.
A delicious way to celebrate ten years
I've been the band's conductor since 2018, and have seen WWB achieve numerous highlights over the past ten years. The ensemble has performed in a variety of venues, from local halls to larger regional events, always delivering spirited performances. Under my leadership, we've tackled an eclectic range of music, from traditional marches and classical pieces to arrangements of contemporary hits, film music, and festive favourites. Much of this journey has been chronicled on our Facebook page.
One of the band’s key strengths has been its openness to musicians of all abilities. Whether seasoned players or those returning to their instruments after years away, the band has fostered a welcoming environment. This inclusivity has not only strengthened the band musically but has also cultivated deep friendships among members. It is this spirit of togetherness, combined with their musical achievements, that has seen WWB thrive over the past decade.
As the band looks ahead to the next ten years, the future is bright. With plans to continue expanding our repertoire and further engaging with the local community, WWB is set to continue making music that brings joy to both players and audiences alike. Here’s to many more anniversaries, concerts, and moments of musical magic! At time of writing, the group are working towards their annual winter concert in Christ Church Downend where they will perform a number of newly acquired Christmas arrangements not performed before by the band.
