One more month to contribute to a fantastic research project currently underway: the Live Music Census. In six cities across the UK, researchers were out and about on 9 and 10 March, finding out about live music events over 24 hours.
But most likely that didn’t capture you – so you can take part online instead: there are four different surveys, for audiences, performers, venues and promoters, and you could win an iPad.
The research, led by Dr Matt Brennan of Edinburgh University and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, is attempting to paint a true picture of the scale of live music in the UK, the financial value of it to the economy, and the biggest issues for music venues (from large to small, concert halls to churches) and promoters, for performers and audiences, including everybody from professional to amateur to youngster, and across every conceivable musical genre.
Making Music contributed to the design of the census and the surveys which are genuinely intended to capture all musical activity. The resulting report should be helpful evidence to lobby for support of the networks and infrastructure underpinning live music right across the music sector.
