Anna’s first visit to the Merchant Sinfonia here in Glasgow was before Christmas. She pitched up with her oboe and played with our oboe section during our rehearsal, which was a really brilliant way to introduce herself to us all. At this stage of course, there was no music and no clue as to what was to come. We went to the pub after rehearsal and started to bond with our newly adopted composer.

We’re pleased to welcome Black Dress Code as Corporate Members of Making Music.

Black Dress Code was founded by Daniella Gluck, mother of a teenage musician exasperated by inappropriate high-street offerings. Daniella decided there was a need for black clothing that could be both high quality and stylish whilst not getting in the way of performance, so teamed up with several designers to create a new unique collection.

The Great War Symphony will première at London's Royal Albert Hall on 9 October 2018 in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and in partnership with Classic FM.  The work has also been recorded at Abbey Road Studios for release in September this year.

Work has been continuing at a hectic pace for my piece for the Bellfolk Handbell Ringers! Following our first workshop at the start of the year, I spent the next six weeks putting together a full draft of the piece, with the aim of bringing something as close as possible to the finished product to our second workshop in February.

There is a lot of debate about music education and arts funding at the moment. But these debates do not take note often enough of issues that affect adult musical activity.

Making Music responds to consultations on behalf of members and the leisure-time music sector. But it really helps if some of you also respond yourselves – bringing home the message with specific examples and stories.

Currently there are two debates you can contribute to, either as an individual or as a music group.

Surrey

New user-led charity NewSPAL is bidding to take on the running of the Surrey Performing Arts Library (SPAL) from Surrey County Council (SCC). The decision will be taken by SCC Cabinet, but not as previously anticipated on 27 March – the relevant meeting will now be on Tuesday 24 April, 2pm, in Kingston.
