National apprenticeship standard for choral directors survey

Join the NSSP in developing a new apprenticeship standard for choral directors and singing tutors by completing a two-minute survey.

The National Schools Singing Programme (NSSP) is currently part of a trailblazer group of employers – including Music Hubs, schools and employers in the Anglican and Catholic churches – which is working to create a national apprenticeship standard for choral directors, classroom singing tutors and other choir leaders, collectively known as ‘Singing Leaders’ in their draft standard. They are united by a belief that a government - and employer-backed - apprenticeship has the potential to remove barriers and significantly broaden access to the profession in the long term.

As part of their submission to the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE, part of the Department for Education), they are currently running a survey to help improve IfATE’s understanding of the sector and to provide evidence that ‘Singing Leader’ (albeit in many forms and with many different job titles) is already an established profession in the UK.

Deadline to complete survey is 31 October

They are really keen to reach as many areas of the sector as they can with the survey, and so have asked Making Music to share the following two-minute survey with our members.

Complete survey

Some notes!

  • This is not just for Making Music members or their singing leaders: please do share with others who could/should complete this!
  • With regards to the use of the word ‘employed’ in the survey, we have double checked with them and they would like all Singing Leaders, whether employed or freelance/self-employed/running their own choirs to complete the survey as you are all working as part of the sector and this survey is to evidence demand for qualified persons (however engaged and however trained).
  • Again, in relation to the use of ‘employed’: many Singing Leaders are freelance Singing Leaders and then employed in non-singing jobs. But the purpose of this survey is to understand the number of job roles which an apprenticeship standard may support in the future and to help demonstrate demand for it. For this reason, please do not include roles unrelated to leading singing when answering the questions.
