Making Music has responded to the Government’s Levelling Up consultation with key contributions from our members. 

The Levelling Up agenda, one of this Government’s flagship commitments, is now taking shape. The autumn budget committed some cash and in February the White Paper was published. Following this, most department’s parliamentary committees undertook consultations with their sectors about how they can contribute to this agenda, and what actions from the Government it would take to facilitate their contribution.

We have heard from a few member groups recently who have been contacted by HMRC and asked to submit a Company Tax Return (CTR). This is the tax return for paying Corporation Tax.

They are all registered charities and have not previously had to submit CTRs or pay any tax, and so contacted us to ask why they were being asked to do so now – and how to do it.  

Why might we have to submit a CTR?

Our members registered as charities don’t generally have to pay tax or file a CTR.

Rebecca Demott of the Bedfordshire Woodwind Academy Flute Ensemble (BWAFE) relates her group's first workshop with music creator Edgar Divver, as part of their collaboration for Adopt a Music Creator 2022.

Today, members of BWAFE met Edgar, our adoptive music creator, face-to-face for the first time. Storm Eunice had tried her best but fallen fences and trees along the way didn't manage to disrupt our plans.
