Musical Director/Conductor

Application deadline:
Tuesday, 31 January 2017
Description of vacancy:

The Linlithgow String Orchestra was formed in May 2016 and is a fairly new group. It is an adult orchestra (18+ years) with an approximate standard of grade 5+. It is the only adult string orchestra in West Lothian. The group initially started as part of the BBC's "Get Playing" initiative and "come and play" sessions were held over the summer for musicians to drop in and play. Since September (our first term) we've met weekly on Monday evenings and worked towards 4 concerts - an informal "drop in" concert in October 2016 at St. Peter's church raising £250 for their extension, our own inaugural Winter Concert in November 2016, a collaborative concert with the Linlithgow Ladies Choir in December 2016 and a private concert for St. Michael's Parish Church guild. We plan to have 3 terms per year culminating in 3 concerts in March, June and November/December (although as the new group in the town there has been much interest in us and we may be asked to perform at additional events such as the Linlithgow Folk Festival). A number of our players have not played for years and some have never been in orchestras but the standard over the past 6 months is already very high. Within the designated terms it will be up to the new conductor/musical director how many rehearsals they wish before the concerts but at the moment weekly rehearsals are planned. Following our AGM in January, the day of the week for rehearsing may change to suit the majority of players. Our rehearsal venue is also likely to change from April due to St. Peter's extension work being carried out.

We are interested in hearing from conductors to take our 2nd term which will run from 24th April and culminate in a performance on Saturday 24th June. As a small community group that has only been running for a short time, this is ideally an unpaid or expenses only position.
