Description of vacancy: 

Key Responsibilities

  • Rehearsals: Lead weekly rehearsals, providing instruction in vocal technique, music theory and performance practices.
  • Performance Planning: Develop and implement with the concert secretary and Trustees a performance schedule, including concerts, and community events.
  • Music Selection: Working with the Music Committee and Trustees to create a diverse repertoire suitable for male voices, balancing classical, contemporary and traditional pieces.
  • Artistic Direction: Set artistic goals for the choir and work towards achieving a high standard of musical performance.
  • Community Engagement: Foster relationships with local organizations, schools, and other choirs to promote the choir and its activities and to extend its appeal to all ages.
  • Leadership: Provide mentorship and guidance to choir members, encouraging their musical development and personal growth.

Qualifications

  • Education: A degree in Music, Choral Conducting or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Proven experience in conducting choirs, particularly male voice choirs, and a strong understanding of choral techniques is preferred.
  • Musicianship: Excellent musicianship, including proficiency in piano and a solid foundation in music theory.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate choir members. Experience of the use of social media to promote the choir is preferred.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organisational abilities, capable of managing multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership qualities, with a collaborative and inclusive approach to working with others.
  • Passion: A genuine passion for choral music and a commitment to achieving excellence in performance.

Working Conditions

  • Schedule: The Music Director will be self-employed and will typically work evening rehearsals currently on Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and weekend performances, with additional hours required for special events and administrative duties.
  • Location:

Rehearsals will be held at The Cross Barn, Palace Gate Farm, Odiham, Hampshire RG29 1JX, the choir's designated venue.

Performances will usually be local but with occasional exchange concerts with other choirs within the UK and overseas tours.

  • Environment: The role is performed in a supportive and collaborative environment, encouraging artistic expression and musical growth.
