Concert - Bach: St Matthew Passion

A major choral concert at Worcester Cathedral, presenting Bach's ultimate Passion oratorio with 150 voices, six stellar soloists and the superb Meridian Sinfonia orchestra.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s inspirational 1727 oratorio St Matthew Passion is both a musical icon for the Christian world and an expression of feelings common to us all. Known as the ‘Great Passion’, it presents a powerful setting of Jesus's final days, drawing on parts of St Matthew’s Gospel. From intimate grief to monumental crowd scenes, the work’s richly scored arias, chorales and choruses sculpt the story into a gripping drama, told with a vivid sense of theatre by double chorus, double orchestra and solo voices.

Accompanying the 150 voices of the accomplished Worcester Festival Choral Society in this performance in magnificent Worcester Cathedral are six, acclaimed soloists and the superb Meridian Sinfonia orchestra. Worcester Cathedral’s director of music, Samuel Hudson, conducts.

Soloists:
SEBASTIAN HILL – tenor (Evangelist)
DAVID SHIPLEY – bass (Christus)
MIRIAM ALLAN – soprano
TOM LILBURN – countertenor
RUAIRI BOWEN – tenor
RICHARD BANNAN – baritone
