Mendelssohn’s oratorio ‘Elijah’ | Making Music

Mendelssohn’s oratorio ‘Elijah’

Premiered in August 1846, the oratorio tells of events in the life of the Prophet, Elijah, as described in the Old Testament, with episodes depicting a range of dramatic events including a contest of the gods and a pillar of fire, the bringing of rain to a parched land, the persecution of Elijah, and his final ascension on a fiery chariot into heaven. The musical writing vividly represents these events, taking us on a journey through a range of emotions.

Together with 3 professional soloists – Sam Young, Verity Joy & Michael Aitkenhead - organist Simon Earl, and narrator Dr Julian Waite, the choral society will bring to life this very dramatic and intense choral work.
