Carmen

As part of Classical Sheffield's 'Classical Weekend' Festival, the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with Opera on Location, Hallam Choral Society, and Sheffield Music Hub to present Bizet’s Carmen—a thrilling tale of passion, jealousy, and revenge, reimagined with a new English libretto in a semi-staged production for today’s audience.

When Micaela’s life is thrown into turmoil as her boyfriend abandons her for another woman, the drama unfolds like an operatic Line of Duty, with corruption, betrayal, and murder at its core.

This gripping performance combines powerful opera singing, a full orchestra and dynamic chorus, to deliver an unforgettable afternoon of high-stakes passion and the ultimate fight for freedom. From the seductive allure of Carmen’s iconic Habanera to the rousing defiance of Escamillo’s Toreador Song, Bizet’s masterpiece brims with unforgettable melodies, building to a breathtaking finale.

Under the bold direction of Rosie Kat and the masterful baton of George Morton, this production lays bare the darker truths of human nature, exploring the destructive forces of violence and obsession while keeping audiences captivated and entertained. Don’t miss this bold and exhilarating reimagining of one of opera’s greatest classics.
