Birdsong inspires the first half of Joanna MacGregor’s piano recital, with witty French music from the 17th century to Liszt’s marvellously colouristic and virtuosic pianism. Mary Lou Williams’ jazzy miniatures provide a perfect foil to Schubert’s last great sonata, a work of lyricism and spiritual growth.
