To fully include everyone in our music activities, we need to understand the barriers that stop people from attending, taking part or progressing. In the Conversation about inclusion series of events, hear about the issues from the perspective of those who directly experience barriers and discuss what we can do to change things from within our own music groups.
The health benefits of taking part in music making, and attending live music events are well documented. But are people with long term health conditions able to access the opportunities we are providing, and benefit from them? And as our members experience changes to their health, are they able to continue to take part in music activity, or attend our concerts?
For this conversation, we are joined by Stephen Deazley, Artistic Director of member group Love Music and founding consultant of the Dementia Inclusive Singing Network. We’ll be talking about the actions a group can take to support people with health conditions to attend and take part in music activity. And we’ll talk about developing an inclusive environment, where everyone feels welcome and supported, particularly when faced with significant health changes.
As so many of us experience health conditions that impact on our music making and attendance, we are keen to hear the experiences of members in member groups in this conversation. What are the things your group does that make it easier, and even possible, for you to be included? And what things would improve your experience, so you can keep doing the thing you love, even as your health changes.
This event will not be recorded and our team will lead the conversation so you are supported to share your thoughts and experiences.
We'll talk about:
- The actions groups can take that enable people with health conditions to take part.
- Creating an inclusive environment, that is welcoming to and supportive of people with health conditions.
- Supporting valued members experiencing health changes.
- Best practice examples that have made it possible for people with health conditions to keep making and enjoying music.
- Anything else that arises on the topic!
There will be an opportunity to ask questions via the chat function during the event.
