Start of Chester Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2024-25 season at Chester Cathdral.
Chester Philharmonic Orchestra starts its new season in Chester Cathedral on Saturday, November 9th, 2024 at 7.30pm with an exciting programme of works by Sergei Prokofiev, Doreen Carwithen, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Lucy Holmes will be soloist in Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1. A work known for its lyrical beauty and dynamic contrasts. This will be Lucy’s second performance with the orchestra, the first being her performance of Schindler’s List in 2016. Lucy has just graduated from the Royal College of Music and was awarded joint honours in violin and composition.
Doreen Carwithen’s "Men of Sherwood Forest",a vibrant and adventurous suite that brings to life the legendary tales of Robin Hood. This rarely performed work highlights Carwithen's distinctive voice, blending cinematic flair with English pastoral themes.
The evening concludes with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s "Job: A Masque for Dancing", a deeply moving and evocative orchestral piece based on the biblical story of Job. This grand composition, inspired by the English choral and dance tradition, promises to captivate audiences with its rich textures and emotional depth.
The concert will be conducted by Richard Howarth who enjoyed a distinguished career as leader of top professional orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish and Manchester Concert Orchestras and the Ulster Orchestra.
