About the event:

Often we think of income ‘only’ in terms of funding, subscriptions or ticket sales. There definitely is a lot to delve into on those three topics, but is there more we could be exploring? Are we thinking about the whole financial picture?

70% of Making Music performing groups and 58% of volunteer promoters break even every year; but 15% and 23% respectively regularly make a loss. So finances are always a topic groups are thinking about, to maintain that balancing act of breaking even, yet remaining accessible to participants and audiences in their community.

2022 was still Covid-influenced in terms of income, but 83% of you had an annual income of below £14,500. So you are not huge, financially – and the good news therefore is that literally every penny helps: even by finding small additional bits of income, you can improve the stability and sustainability of your group.

So join us to talk about all the possible sources of income, how realistic – and reliable – they are, and how you may vary them to achieve as much as you can financially for your group. This will include funding, subscriptions, ticket sales, other earned income, sponsorship, tax reliefs, donations.

Making Music will introduce the topics with a presentation, including talking about the statistics from the Big Survey 2022, and provide information and links to relevant Making Music resources.

There will also be plenty of opportunity to share your experiences and tips and to ask fellow members’ advice, in the main Zoom room and breakout rooms.

We'll talk about:

  • What the potential sources of income are for your music group
  • What are their pros and cons – reliability, prospects, amounts, repeatability
  • How you might think of maximising them in the context of your group
  • Your particular challenges and issues to debate and ask of fellow members

There will be an opportunity to ask questions via the chat function during the event.
