Chairs and leaders meet up (online event)

Registration is closed for this event

About the event:

The responsibility that lies with Chairs and other leaders of music organisations can feel overwhelming, particularly in times of change. Making Music is hosting this meetup so you can connect with others in the same role, and talk about your challenges and successes.

At this meet up we’ll be exploring how to build peer-to-peer groups. We heard from Chairs previously that meeting in smaller groups to network and support each other would be beneficial, particularly Chairs of groups that are local to you. We’ll talk about how Making Music can support you to make this happen, and what else you might need to make peer-to-peer connecting work for you.

Hugh Elder – accredited mediator and amateur choral singer – will be sharing his expertise on how to avoid conflict, what to do when it arises, and when referring to mediation might find a resolution. Hugh became a Corporate Member of Making Music during the pandemic, when he offered pro bono mediation to help members resolve COVID-19 related issues such as venue hire and professional musician engagement.

We’ll also raise the tricky topic of conflict resolution. We often talk to Chairs when they are struggling to resolve a conflict and unfortunately sometimes when relationships have broken down beyond repair. What would help leaders to deal with disagreements before they derail your group’s plans?

We'll talk about:

  • How to build peer-to-peer groups
  • How Making Music can support you to connect with leaders of groups in your area, or in your community of interest
  • What training or support would a peer-to-peer group need to be most useful?
  • Your stories of resolving conflict. What support did or would have helped find a positive resolution?
  • What is mediation, how can you access it and when is it the intervention you need?

There will be an opportunity to ask questions via the chat function during the event.

Who this event is for: Anyone is welcome to attend this event, but it will be especially useful for Chairs and others leading a small or large change in their leisure-time music group or volunteer promoter group.
