Engaging and working with the musical leader for your group (online event)

Registration is closed for this event

98% of Making Music members have a music professional leading their group – but how to find and engage the right individual, and what are the different models of how music directors and committees work together?

Making Music will talk about some of the practical help we have to help you find the right musical leader for your group: our Musical Vacancies tool, template contract, the fee results from the Big Survey 2022, and our ‘Searching for a Music Director’ resource.

We will then hear from two musical leaders, Rhiannon Harrison who leads instrumental groups and Manvinder Rattan, a choral conductor, on their experience of conducting a group, of being recruited into the role, their start at a new group and how they interact with the committee.

Then the word goes to the groups which engage the musical leaders, with committee members from different groups speaking about how they work with their musical director, how programming works, how involved members of the group are, who has the final say on repertoire, what role the cost of music plays, and how they support their MD.

We will hear from: Judy Craven, Chair of Monmouth Choral Society; Susan Kilgour, Chair of Worcester Philharmonic Orchestra; and Helen Coulson, Chair of Twickenham Choral.

There will be plenty of time to share your own models and ask questions of the speakers.
