The UK may be heading for Brexit, but a new non-profit songbook aims to showcase both the individual national identity and shared heritage of European states.
In each country, students and teachers from music colleges (in the case of the UK these were Birmingham Conservatoire, RCM and RAM) nominated pieces in a series of categories to represent different facets of their country. From this shortlist, music lovers are now invited to vote for their six favourites to be featured in the final book as representative of the UK.
34 British songs in six categories – love, nature, freedom & peace, folk songs, faith and children's songs – have been nominated, from Ralph Vaughan Williams' Linden Lea to Lennon's Let It Be.
Former Birmingham Conservatoire Principal, Professor David Saint is the European Union Songbook Editor for the UK. He said:
“The EU Songbook brings together various manifestations of an important aspect of our great European musical heritage and it's an aspect that could so easily be lost. How wonderful that among longer established UK songs are several more contemporary offerings, for a living tradition is one that is constantly evolving.”
