Music Director

Application deadline:
Wednesday, 30 June 2021
Description of vacancy:

Cardiff Bach Choir is a friendly, auditioned choir and has currently around 60 members who have varied, but sound musical experience and knowledge. We rehearse on Tuesday nights during school term time from 7.15-9.15 currently at Coed Glas Primary School, Llanishen, Cardiff.

The choir usually gives two main concerts a year and a more informal summer concert. We use the major venues in the City such as Hoddinott Hall in the Wales Millennium Centre and Llandaff Cathedral as well as some of the smaller churches in the area. In addition, the choir or small groups from the choir perform at charity and other events. We use a professional orchestra for at least one of our concerts and usually employ professional soloists though we try and encourage young Welsh talent. Our rehearsals are accompanied by a professional répétiteur who has been with the choir for some 16 years.

We are looking for a forward thinking Musical Director to ensure the continued development of the choir and inspire us as we recover from Covid and the difficulties of the last two seasons and into a bright musical future.

  • The candidate should be an excellent musician with a variety of musical skills, especially vocal coaching skills which will enable the choir to achieve high-quality concert performances for which we are known.
  • The person appointed will have experience of both choral and orchestral conducting
  • We are seeking someone with skills to develop the choir’s performance and technique in a dynamic and motivational manner through a rehearsal programme built on engagement, enthusiasm, hard work and fun.
  • The candidate should also bring with them a wide knowledge of musical repertoire to engage both choir and audience. Ideally the applicant will be familiar with the music of Bach and his contemporaries but also the knowledge and ability to explore new works and plan exciting and imaginative programmes within budget set by the committee.
  • With this appointment, we are seeking proactively to increase our membership, particularly attracting younger singers
  • A good set of interpersonal, organizational and communication skills will enhance all of the above.

The MD is paid in line with recommended rates which are regularly reviewed and initially will be based on experience.

(Depending upon the number of applicants and the situation regarding group gatherings we will expect short listed candidates to conduct a small group of singers from the choir observing all the guidance.)
