Founded in 1976, the Festival Chorus is a choir of over 100 voices based between Clapham and Wandsworth Commons. We are one of the most accomplished amateur choirs in South London, performing three times a year alongside professional soloists and orchestra. About the position
As Musical Director of the Festival Chorus you will have full responsibility for conducting, rehearsing, teaching and inspiring the choir. This includes leading weekly rehearsals (Monday evenings in Broomwood Church Hall, Kyrle Road, London, SW11 6BD and 2 Saturday morning) rehearsals a term. The ideal candidate will bring to the role a combination of enthusiasm, fun, decisiveness, clarity, musicality and patience.
Responsibilities
The Musical Director will:
- prepare and rehearse the choir for three concerts each year;
- develop and implement a rehearsal plan for each performance;
- work with our accompanist at rehearsals, and conduct the choir, soloists and orchestra at performances;
- ensure the choir performs with a consistent and excellent sound;
- attend Festival Chorus committee meetings (twice a term plus the AGM in July) to develop the choir’s overall musical strategy, including sourcing new material and commissioning new compositions;
- work with our Programming Sub-committee to propose pieces for future concerts.
Skills, attributes and experience
Required:
- A highly qualified musician, with relevant choral conducting qualifications and experience.
- Knowledge and experience of the classical choral repertoire.
- Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, including motivational skills.
- Excellent sight-reading ability.
- Excellent piano playing skills
Desirable:
- Experience conducting an amateur, non-audition choir.
- Experience arranging choral music.
Remuneration
The Musical Director will be paid in line with ISM rates, depending on experience.
