Conductor

Application deadline:
Wednesday, 6 May 2020
Description of vacancy:

Southend Symphony Orchestra needs a conductor!

Are you that new person that is ready to work with the oldest established symphony orchestra in Southend starting in September 2020?

We are an amateur orchestra numbering around 70 players from the surrounding community and area.

We have been fortunate to have enjoyed the collaboration with our present conductor for over 10 years, working on diverse, exciting and challenging programmes that have included Korngold, Gershwin, Nielsen, Bernstein, Sibelius, as well as traditional repertoire and concertos with visiting soloists.

Due to increased commitments by our present conductor, our members are looking to work with a new person to further our repertoire and prepare for three Saturday concerts per year, that are traditionally held in October, February and June. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm - 9.30pm during term time in Leigh-on Sea, Essex, mostly as a full orchestra with sectionals as needed.

Our players are fundamental to the continuing future success of our orchestra and regular suggestions are asked from the orchestra members to guide future concert programmes. In conjunction with a supportive committee, we want to appoint a person with excellent communication skills and humour, who understands the demands that some music can have on instruments and instrumentalists and to work in a collaborative way to further move our orchestra’s capabilities.

Our friendly and welcoming members, some of whom are music graduates and teachers are a range of people from many walks of life with a variety of playing experiences and need a person to fire their enthusiasm and demonstrate their ability to work with us.

The role:

For you, our conductor, we will work with commitment and respect, be ready to listen and respond to your musical ideas.

We want you to inspire and work with the whole orchestra, collaborate on programme choices and communicate well with music at the heart of our learning, leading to exciting performances.

We welcome interest from conductors who can demonstrate their commitment to take us into the next phase of our music playing and work in partnership with us. The opportunities to meet the orchestra and work with us will be at rehearsals to take place on Wednesday evenings in June and July 2020.

Please email the Chairperson of SSO, Mrs Mandy Bearman, with a letter of interest and CV by 6th May 2020 on ajbearman@blueyonder.co.uk
