Description of vacancy:
TEIGN CHORAL SOCIETY
Teign Choral Society is looking for a Choir Accompanist to replace the renowned Carol Massey who is retiring at the end of our Spring Concert on May 10th this year.
- Teign Choral is a well established and friendly Society which was formed in 1954.
- We perform two Concerts per year – a Christmas Concert usually about the second week in December and a Spring Concert, often on the second Saturday in May.
- We rehearse in St James the Less’ Church in Teignmouth on Wednesday Evenings from 19.30 to 21.15.
- Our Christmas Concert is held there and our season runs from early to mid-September for about 14 rehearsals.
- Our Christmas Concert consists of the usual familiar mix of Choir and Congregational Carols and Readings. Additionally, just before the mid-concert Interval we sing a more substantive piece of about 15 to 20 minutes. In the past we have performed items such as James Whitbourne’s “Missa Carolae”; Bob Chilcott’s “On Christmas Night”; Music from Saint Saen’s “Christmas Oratorio” and John Rutter’s “Brother Heinrich’s Christmas”. In our recent Concert in December 2024 we performed Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasia on Christmas Carols”.
- Our Summer Concert is held in the nearby St. Michael’s Church and this season runs from early to mid-January until early May for about 16 rehearsals.
- Our Summer Concert is a Hybrid – “Serious Music” in the first half followed by Light Music in the second. This is done with two aims -1. To introduce music of both kinds to as wide a Teignmouth audience as possible and -2 To introduce people who like one genre to the delights of the other. With only one concert during the Spring and Summer our Choristers get the opportunity of singing both genres. Previous Concerts have coupled Mozart’s Coronation Mass with music from Guys and Dolls; Opera Choruses with Gilbert and Sullivan Choruses; A celebration of two recent ‘significant’ Birthdays with Karl Jenkins’ Motets with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Phantom’ and Dvorak’s Mass in D with a full concert version of Joseph. Our coming concert on May 10th couples Fauré’s Requiem with Music from Stage and Screen.
Please contact our MD, David Bowles on 07503 212 850 or our Chair Carole-Anne Barr on 07472 059 428 for more information.
We are not a rich Choir, but the Accompanist’s Fees are negotiable.
Although we are happy to talk to any interested accompanist, we feel the position might be attractive for a young musician who would benefit from the very useful experience.
